Water Sources Present in Clinic:

  • One hot/cold water tap in reception

  • Two toilet sinks (shared between two WCs)

  • 15-litre under-sink point-of-use water heater (no storage tank)

  • Nespresso Momento commercial coffee machine (with refillable internal water tank)

Medium

Weekly flushing, part of cleaning rota

Low

Toilet Sinks (x2)

Possible biofilm in pipework or traps if unused

Medium

Daily use by staff and patients ensures turnover; weekly clean

Low

15L Instant Undersink Heater

Warm standing water can support Legionella growth

Medium

Thermostat-controlled heating >60°C, flushed weekly, serviced annually

Low

Nespresso Momento

Internal water tank may harbour stagnant water if not changed

Medium

Water changed daily; heats >70°C; automatic descaling and cleaning followed; logged monthly

Low

3. Control Measures

A. General Clinic Measures

  • No water storage tanks in the building

  • All taps are run for at least 2 minutes weekly

  • All sinks and water outlets are cleaned with disinfectant as part of the weekly cleaning protocol.

  • Under-sink water heater set to maintain >60°C

  • All areas with water access have good ventilation

B. Appliance-Specific Control: Nespresso Momento

  • Water tank emptied and refilled daily or when depleted

  • The heating mechanism raises water temperature above 70°C, eliminating bacterial risk

  • Descaling and cleaning performed as per the in-built manufacturer protocol

  • Descaling is logged monthly in the appliance maintenance file

  • Nozzles and exterior cleaned as part of the daily open/close checklist

4. Monitoring and Maintenance Schedule

  • All flushing and outlet checks are recorded weekly in the Facilities Log

  • Annual inspection of the water heater by a competent plumber

  • Monthly descaling log for Nespresso reviewed by the clinic manager

  • Weekly cleaning checklist includes sink traps, taps, and splash zones

5. Training and Awareness

  • Staff are trained to understand the signs of Legionella risk and how to monitor low-use outlets.

  • Instructions provided during induction on how to carry out weekly flushing.

  • Staff responsible for appliances are briefed on the cleaning and descaling protocols.

6. Risk Assessment Conclusion

  • Overall Risk Level After Controls Applied: Low

  • Are Current Control Measures Sufficient? ☑ Yes ☐ No

  • Additional Measures Required? ☐ Yes ☑ No

Review Schedule: This risk assessment will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are any changes to the clinic layout, water systems, or introduction of new appliances.
