Potential Hazards:

   • Risk of drug exposure from improper disposal

Symptoms of Exposure:

   • Botulinum Toxin: Muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing (extremely rare with proper handling)

   • Lidocaine: Local numbness, potential allergic reaction

 

4. Risk Control Measures


A. Safe Handling & Disposal

   • Expired medications must be disposed of in the designated pharmaceutical waste bins

   • Residual drug waste must be disposed of in sharps bins if in a syringe

   • Medication vials must be opened and emptied into pharmaceutical waste before disposal


B. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Required

   • Disposable gloves when handling injectable waste

   • Eye protection if handling large volumes of liquid medication


C. Spill & Incident Management

Drug Waste Spill Procedure:

   • Wear gloves and absorb liquid with a spill kit

   • Dispose of contaminated materials in pharmaceutical waste

   • Report any incidents of skin or eye exposure to management


D. Waste Disposal & Storage

   • Pharmaceutical waste must be stored separately from general clinical waste

   • Collection must be arranged with a licensed waste disposal service

   • Storage area must be locked and secure at all times

 

5. Emergency Procedures

   • For Skin Contact: Wash area with soap and water

   • For Eye Exposure: Rinse with sterile saline, seek medical attention if irritation persists

   • For Accidental Injection: Follow NHS exposure protocol, seek medical advice
